Controller
Advance Transit is a not-for-profit charitable organization that offers fare-free transit services in Vermont and New Hampshire. Our mission is to ensure the livability and accessibility of Upper Valley communities by providing safe, effective, and friendly public transportation. Advance transit is committed to enhancing access to jobs, housing, healthcare, shopping, schools, and other community resources. In addition, they aim to provide an appealing alternative to driving, reduce traffic congestion, manage parking demand, and operate in a sustainable manner.
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the core financial operations of the organization, from managing the sub-ledgers to the general ledger and including cash management, budgeting, and financial statement preparation.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Financial Operations
- Organize, direct, and coordinate the full range of activities related to general ledger, accounts payable, cash management, and accounts receivable.
- Organize, direct, and coordinate the accounting for and reporting on all grant revenue and expenditures, as well as the physical tracking, reporting, and accounting of fixed assets and their corresponding depreciation schedules.
- Develop and administer grant cost allocation programs in compliance with internal and external regulatory and reporting requirements.
- Organize, direct, and coordinate investment programs that are within the organization’s risk tolerance and contribute towards the fulfillment of the organization’s mission.
Risk and Compliance
- Organize, direct, and coordinate the performance of internal controls that protect the organization against loss, errors, and fraud.
- Oversee audits of the organization’s accounts.
Reporting and Analysis
- Prepare all reports required for the annual audit and preparation of the Federal 990, including the Schedule of Federal Awards and the Statement of Functional Expenses.
- Prepare monthly financial reports for the Board which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
- Provide management with timely reviews of the organization's financial status and progress in its various programs and activities.
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of the annual budget, capital plan, fixed asset depreciation schedule, and cost models as needed.
Leadership
- Supervise and mentor staff who are engaged in financial operations.
- Collaborate with other departments on company-wide initiatives and other special projects as needed.
- Represent the organization in a positive manner in all interactions with the Board of Directors, staff, partners, and members of the community.
- Work effectively as part of a team, resolve conflict constructively, and give and receive feedback gracefully.
Required Skills, Experience and Attributes
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred.
- Federal grant accounting and non-profit accounting experience preferred.
- Management and supervisory experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Eagerness to learn.
- Relevant professional experience.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and three years of active use with Excel.
- Attentiveness to details and deadlines.
- Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work efforts.
- Strong problem solving and analysis skills.
- Working knowledge of essential GAAP principles.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of the job, the employee will work primarily in an indoor office environment with moderate levels of noise. Work will also include travel and/or visits to other Towns, Donors, Partners within the Upper Valley on a regular basis.
