Monday through Friday 5am-2pm, 40-45 hours per week
Hours will vary during the training period.
Rotating Saturday coverage required.
Wage: $32 to $38 per hour, based on experience
Overtime eligible

Job Description
Reporting to the Maintenance & Facilities Manager, repair buses and other equipment, as directed. Order parts, when needed, maintain work area, and respond to road calls. CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement required. This position is classified as “safety sensitive” and as such is subject to Federal Transportation Authority (FTA) mandated drug and alcohol testing.
Essential Functions
- Inspect transit passenger vehicles, to meet all DOT regulations.
- Perform Preventative Maintenance on each type of Advance Transit vehicle.
- Diagnose equipment failures and repair as required.
- Remove units such as engines, transmission, or differential, as necessary.
- Disassemble unit and inspect parts for wear, lubricating parts where needed.
- Repair or replace parts as needed, including heating and cooling systems, and wheels and tires.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical issues.
- Replace and adjust brakes, align front end, repair, or replace shock absorbers, and solder leaks in radiators.
- Fabricate and weld when necessary.
- Coordinate and order supplies as needed in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and shop equipment.
- Properly use and maintain shop equipment. When necessary, repair tools and/or equipment to ensure all equipment is functioning safely and properly.
- Ensure that all proper repair orders are maintained, as well as other necessary paperwork.
- Repair or assist in repair on road call breakdowns as required and determine whether the vehicle is safe. Remain in communication with by radio or other means whenever on duty.
- Assist with bus fueling and checking fluid levels, as needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area.
Required Skills, Abilities, and Experience
- Minimum 1 year of heavy-duty mechanical experience required.
- Able to read and interpret schematics.
- Proficient with maintenance diagnostic software.
- Able to troubleshoot major component issues.
- Understand electrical concepts, able to diagnose and repair.
- Air brake diagnosis and repair knowledge and experience.
- Experience with heavy duty preventative maintenance plans.
- Familiar with OSHA Safety Standards.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals.
- Accurately document reports and repair notes using computerized maintenance software system.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Effective listening skills.
- Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with others.
Required Licenses and Certifications
While the following licenses and certifications are required for the Maintenance Technician position, applicants are not required to have them at the time of hire. However, candidates must be able and willing to obtain these credentials within a specific time frame as determined by the company:
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement
- Valid DOT Medical Card
- VT State Inspection License
- Air Brake Certification
- EPA 608 Certification
- EPA 609 Certification
Training and support will be provided to help new hire achieve these certifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high precarious places, risk of electrical shock, explosives, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the area and overnight travel may be expected for training and industry conferences.
